Since Animal Protection Law was put into effect in 1998, our country has implemented several measures to enforce it. All the effort have caused the reduction in the population of stray dogs.
Dr. Andrew Fei, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Taiwan University, researched into the population of stray dogs of 1999 and 2004 in accordance with the photograph recapture method designated by World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Fei’s reports show the population of stray dogs drops from 667,000 in 1999 to 179,000 in 2004. He concludes that the decline in the population of stray dogs may attribute to the conceptual change of the public, encouragement to pet sterilization and a moderate degree of capture of stray dogs.
