Bureau of Animal and Plant Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) indicate that reaffirms that Taiwan has had no animal rabies case since 1961 and European Union, Germany, Switzerland and Japan have recognized Taiwan as rabies-free country so far.
For more than 50 years, BAPHIQ has taken aggressive measures to prevent the introduction of rabies in Taiwan, including immunization projects, surveillance of rabies antigen and antibody in dogs, advertisement campaigns against rabies and the establishment of emergency plan etc.
In order to reinforce the quarantine measures, BAPHIQ has promulgated the amendment of Rules for the Importation of Dogs or Cats into Taiwan on February 18, 2005. The amendment asks for the report of neutralization antibody titration test for rabies in accordance with OIE code.
In the meantime, BAPHIQ issues veterinary certificate according to the rules of the importing country. Therefore European Union, Japan, Germany and Switzerland presume that Taiwan is rabies-free consistently.
Finally, we would like to remind you that the most important thing to prevent rabies is your awareness and participation. Remember to have their pets immunized with inactive rabies vaccine every year. Once suspecting that smuggling is happening or is about to happen, please do not hesitate to call 0800-039131 or mail to P.O. Box 5-40, Taipei to inform BAPHIQ.
